How long is the robotics season?
Each year, teams of high school students, coaches, and mentors work during a six-week period to build robots capable of competing in that year’s game that weigh up to 125 pounds (57 kg).
How long is the first Robotics Kickoff?
The show will last for about 45 minutes*. Please note the date and the time for Kickoff. Usually, Kickoff occurs the first Saturday of every January.
What is build season?
Our Build Season encompasses six weeks of brainstorming where students start from scratch to build and program a robot for the Competition Season. We start working on the day of Kickoff and split off into groups as we go along.

Under strict rules, limited time and resources, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get.

How many levels of first robotics are there?
FIRST offers a suite of robotics programs for PreK-12 (ages 4-18): the FIRST ® Robotics Competition for Grades 9-12 (ages 14 to 18); the FIRST ® Tech Challenge for Grades 7-12 (ages 12 to 18); and the FIRST ® LEGO League for Grades PreK-8 (ages 9 to 16; ages vary by country).
